Whiteness and Double Standards
I’ve been talking a lot lately about the connections between the ways we’re socialized and our understanding of implicit bias. Since conscious and explicit beliefs justify implicit attitudes, it’s important to remember that we can’t talk about implicit bias without talking about structural racism as a function of white supremacy.
While gathering materials for an upcoming workshop on implicit bias I typed the terms ‘whiteness” and “double standards” into my web browser’s search bar. I was a bit surprised to see that some of my old writings from the archives of Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian came up. Sharing them below:
From January 2015: The Art of War: How the Masses are Convinced to be Complicit With Oppression
From April 2015: What is the White Community Going to Do About Racism?
From February 2016: Yes, Anger Does Influence My Approach to Racial Justice Work, and No, We Won’t Calm Down
From October 2016: “Inspirational” Comparisons Between Light and Darkness as Tools of Anti-Blackness
From January 2018: White People Need to be Better People
From February 2018: White Denial, Mental Health, and Mass Shootings
