MLK Week at Mary Free Bed: DEI+B Dialogue Series

Mary Free Bed began their inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Dialogue Series this year, centered on social justice topics in healthcare. At the invitation of my good friend and co-conspirator Adriana Almanza, I presented my Social Justice 101 workshop to the staff.

I provided an introduction to social justice concepts, exploring key terms, frameworks, and systemic factors that perpetuate inequity. Participants explored ways to critically examine how their experiences with identity, power, privilege, and oppression inform their understanding of Social Justice issues in healthcare.

I’ll often share additional resources for participants to reflect on after the end of my talks and workshops, and this time in particular, I was happy to share a resource from someone I know personally. Fortunately for the group, I had just published my conversation with my good friend, Mia Henry, founder and CEO of Freedom Lifted at Social Justice Origin Stories.

When it comes to defining what social justice really means, I appreciate the way Mia explains the essence of social justice work and the importance of working toward a world where identity does not determine our access to power, resources, and justice.

With all the current attacks and intentional misunderstandings of what Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion represent, Mia’s teachings in this clip offer some much-needed grounding.
